September 2013 Newsletter

Senior Room

Pupils in the senior room are learning about procedural writing.

We are focusing on “Nathanna Cainte” in Irish lessons.

Irish & English packs must be returned every fortnight both read and signed.

We have adopted a team teaching approach to numeracy in the senior room this year. Mrs. Costello is teaching the 5th & 6th class set and Ms. Malone is teaching the 3rd & 4th class set.



Junior Room

Pupils in the junior room are settling into their new class very well!

The boys and girls have been learning poems and songs about the seasons. They created beautiful autumn tree paintings using the “pointillism” technique.


School Milk Scheme

We hope to register our school with the school milk scheme this year. Please fill in the attached form if you wish your child to receive milk everyday. The cost per child per week is approximately €1.08 for a daily 189ml carton.




Book bills

Please return book rental/art& photocopying, etc. money by end of September.



Strokestown Park House

The senior pupils will travel to Strokestown Park House on Thursday 19th September as part of a History field trip. We are learning about buildings in our area. The cost of the trip is €13 per child.



Mrs. McGowan, our new junior room teacher will be starting with us on Thursday 26th September. We look forward to meeting her!



Polling Day

Rahara NS will be closed on Friday 4th October to facilitate voting in the referendum.





Staff Meeting

School will finish at 2pm for all pupils on Thursday 3rd October to facilitate a staff meeting.




Mid Term

School closes @3pm on Friday 25th October for Mid-Term and re-opens on Monday 4th November @ 9:20am.



School Opening times

School opens at 9:20am sharp. We thank parents for adhering to these times.



Curricular Plan

We have updated our whole school plan for Gaeilge. This is available for parents to view in the office, if they wish.




Gaelic & soccer training takes place on Wednesdays. Please ensure each child wears plain navy, grey or black tracksuit bottoms. Each child must have a gumshield, shin-guards and football boots/runners.




Award of Science and Maths 2013

Congratulations to all the pupils and Ms.Malone, Discover Primary Science and Maths co-ordinator, all your hard wok has paid off! Rahara NS has achieved another Discover Primary Science and Maths Award of Science and Maths Excellence for the 2012/13 academic year! The DPSM assessment team were very excited to see all the hard work done by pupils and teachers in Rahara NS. The standard of log books and the wide variety of science and maths work being carried out was very impressive; it is clear that the teachers and pupils are using a wide variety of resources (including the DPSM and Greenwave websites) and engaging in hands-on investigation in the classroom and beyond.

Our plaque will arrive at the end of May and will be mounted on our "wall of fame"! This is our sixth year in a row to recieve the award.

Rahara N.S. Newsletter April 2013

Senior Room

Pupils in the senior room have started their novel, Carrie’sWar, by Nina Bawden. We are reading and responding to the historical fictional novel and watching the BBC drama, “Carrie’s War”.

Junior Room

The junior room are learning anIrish song “Fáilte Romhat”. We are really enjoying our class novel “Charlotte’s Web”. The boys and girls are learning about space and planet Earth. We are starting to make paper maché planets!

2nd class are busy preparing for their First Holy Communion.


Roscommon Primary Schools 5-a-side soccer will takeplace on Wednesday 24th April in Lecarrow county grounds for senior pupils. We will be leaving at 10am and returning at 2pm. Any parents who would be available to givelifts to and from the event please let me know. Thank you.


Congratulations to pupils who received their first confessions recently and to sixth class who were confirmed last week.

Public Health Nurse

PHN will visit Jnr infants & 6th class in coming days. Please return HSE forms for the PHN.


Our last swimming session takesplace on Thursday 25th April. Please return all outstanding swim fees to school by 25th April. The cost is €40 per pupil.

After School Clubs

The After School Clubs are underway

Baking & French Clubs run on Mondays for 4 weeks:

15th, 22nd, 29th April & 13th May.

Soccer and Science Clubs will run o nMondays for 4 weeks:

20th, 27th May& 10th, 17th June.

Open Evening for New Enrolments

There will be and open evening for new enrolments on Thursday 16th May @ 6pm. All new entrants are invited along with their parents to meet the staff.

Green Flag Biodiversity

We had a very successful visit from our Green Flag inspector, Marian Parker. She gave us very positive feedback after the inspection. We are still awaiting the official letter of renewal. We hope to have a cermony to celebrate the new flag for Biodiversity on Friday 14th June. All parents & family will be invited, so keep your diary free!

Easter Raffle

Congratulations to Michael Connaughton who won the hamper in our Easter raffle. Thanks to all who sold lines and supported the raffle, we raised €956.90 for the school.

Discover PrimaryScience & Maths

Ms Malone and pupils are busy preparing our Discovery Primary Science project.

Prize Winners

We had three prize winners in the Garda Síochána Road SafetyPoster competition: 1st Alana O’Malley, 2nd ClodaghKeenan, 3rd Chloe McDonnell. Presentation of prizes will take place on Monday 20th May @11am in the Convent Primary School Roscommon. The overall winner will be announced on the day. Good luck to our winners!

Green Schools Award Success

Congratulations!! An Taisce has great pleasure in informing the pupils of Rahara NS that your application for the renewal of the International Green Flag has been successful! We are delighted with the great news and look forward to our Green Flag ceremony on June 14th. We will celebrate in style when the Army band, the band of the 4th Western Brigade, will visit our school and serenade us while we raise our new flag! All parents and family will be invited to this wonderful celebration. More details to follow.

Well done to all the pupils and the Green Schools committee for all their hard work over the past two years learning about biodiversity.

After School Clubs

After School Clubs begin on Monday 15th April. The clubs will finish at 4pm. We will facilitate both a French club and Baking club on Monday 15th April for four weeks. The pupils have been selected for the clubs and a text has been sent to parents informing them of this information. French and Baking will take place on Monday 15th April, 22nd April, 29th April and 13th May. The cost per session is €2 per pupil.


Soccer and Science Clubs will take place on Monday 20th May, 27th May, 10th June and 17th June. All pupils from 1st-6th class will attend these clubs.

Easter Fundraiser

A massive thank you to all parents, friends and family who supported our Easter fundraiser draw. We collected €956.80 for our school! The winner of the Easter hamper was Michael Connaughton.



Gaelic Training Resumes

Gaelic training resumes for all classes on Wednesday 17th April for term 3. It is now compulsory that all pupils must wear gum shields/mouth guards whilst playing Gaelic football. The rule change of wearing a gum shield in all under age games to minor level now affects the insurance cover of school children who play gaelic football as a school activity under the governance of the GAA. Please ensure your child has a gum shield for gaelic training on Wednesdays.

Senior Room


Pupils in the senior room are busy preparing songs for confirmation.

They are busy creating biodiversity trails for visitors to our school. We are busy practicing our informal Irish, gaeilge neamhfhoirmiúil, for Seachtain na Gaeilge. “Is fearr gaeilge briste ná bearla cliste”-it’s better to have broken Irish than clever English! We are looking forward to the table quizzes, games, ceilé dancing and school concert!


Junior Room


The junior room have been busy investigating 2D & 3D shapes all around the school! They worked in groups identifying 2D & 3D shapes in the playground.

The children created beautiful sunflower paintings, inspired by the painting “Sunflowers” by Vincent Van Gogh.


Seachtain na Gaeilge

Seachtain na Gaeilge will take place during the week of 11th March. The speaking of Irish will be greatly encouraged in the school. Pupils will participate in a table quiz, treasure hunt, play games “as gaeilge”, learn some ceilé dancing and participate in a school concert. A “Gaelageoir na Seachtaine” will be chosen from each room and a prize will be awarded.


Lá Glas/ Green Day

There will be a non-uniform day on Wednesday 13th March. Pupils must wear as many green items as possible to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge.



Fr. Milton & Fr. Cullen will hear confessions in the school on Friday 8th March.



Confirmation Retreat

The pupils from 6th class will travel to Knock on Thursday 14th March to participate in a confirmation retreat. The cost of the retreat is €10. The bus will depart @ 9am from Knockcroghery NS and return @ 4pm to Knockcroghery NS. Rory Silke will travel with the pupils along with teachers from Ballymurray, Knockcroghery & Glanduff schools.


Commitment Cermony

A Commitment Ceremony will take place on Tuesday 19th March @ 6pm in St. John’s Church. All 6th class pupils, parents and/or sponsors must attend.


Green Flag Biodiversity

Our Green Flag inspector will visit the school on 20th March to assess our knowledge of Biodiversity with the Green Flag committee and pupils. We wish the pupils all the best with the inspection and hope we are successful in achieving our 5th Green Flag!


Easter Raffle

An Easter raffle will take place this month. Raffle cards will be distributed in the coming days. It will be €2 per line. The raffle of the Easter egg will take place on Friday 22nd March. The Easter egg is sponsored by Hi-Line Motors, Dublin and Splash Graphics, Athlone.



World Book Day

We will celebrate World Book Day in school on Thursday 7th March. Children are invited to bring their favourite book(s) to school.


National Spring Clean Day

National Spring Clean Day will take place on Friday 8th March in Rahara NS. All pupils will get involved in cleaning up our local area.

Senior Room


The senior room have been busy preparing debates. The sixth class debating team participated in the Primary Debating Ireland competition. During our energy focus week all pupils participated in debates. The pupils have been enjoying improving their oral language skills and developing their persuasive language


Junior Room

The boys and girls in the junior room have been learning about Saints, including St. Brigid, St. Bernadette & St. Valentine. All children contributed greatly to activities during Catholic Schools week.


Swimming Lessons

Swimming lessons commence on 28th February. All pupils attend these lessons and the cost of same is €40 per pupil. Please return money to school on or before final lesson on 25th April. On swimming days parents may attend Roscommon Leisure Centre to assist their own children with drying and changing.

Confirmation will take place in Knockcroghery Church on Wednesday 10th April 2013 at 11am



Teresa Melia; our dioscean advisor, visited our school on 11th February. She carried out a prayer service with the children.

Fr. Milton distributed Holy Ashes to all pupils today, Ash Wednesday.



Mid-Term Break

The school will be closed on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th February for mid-term break.


Opening Times

School starts officially at 9:20am. The BOM and staff cannot accept responsibility for pupils before 9:20am. We would like to thank parents for adhering to these times.


County Photos

The photos that were ordered from the proofs will be delivered to us next week.



School Tour

Our ski tour for 3rd – 6th classes takes place on Thursday 21st February. Pupils should bring a packed lunch. There will be no shopping but there is a vending machine on site. Pupils should wear warm, flexible clothing, long smooth socks and strong gloves. Waterproof clothing should be brought in case of rain. No phones are allowed. A text message will be sent to parents when we know our time of arrival home. Our expected time of arrival is 4:30pm.

MP3 players/ ipods are allowed, but pupils are responsible for their own devices.


Green Flag Biodiversity

Thank you to all parents who donated materials to our bug hotel. Our bug hotel was completed by all pupils during our Biodiversity Action Day. The pupils in the senior room completed a web of life and investigated a woodland river eco-system. The senior pupils investigated how the greenhouse effect works by carrying out experiments in class. Our Green Flag inspector is coming on 19th March!! Keep up the great work. Next week our focus week is on “water.”

Discover Primary Science

Parents are asked to donate their kitchen roll tubes for our Discover Primary Science experiments on investigating slopes. Please send them in to school on Monday 18th February.



Catholic Schools Week

We celebrated Catholic schools week during the week of 28th January. An assembly was held in GP hall and lessons were carried out in class.



GAA Gum Shields requirement
