COVID

The last three months have been very trying and difficult times for everyone. As a school community, we will continue to play our part in making our school as safe as possible for staff and pupils. Please continue to wear masks at all times when on school grounds and do not enter the school building to accompany your child to the classroom. Please socially distance when dropping/collecting your children. If you wish to speak to a member of staff you can do so by: email, phone call or ring the bell at the front door. Thank you for you co-operation.

We are extremely proud of all pupils in the senior room who continue to wear their face coverings every day. We know that it is not easy and congratulate them all on how well they have adapted to this new safety measure.

Friends for Life

Ms. Watson will begin the Friends for Life (anxiety & resilience) programme in the New Year with the senior room once teacher training has been completed. www.friendsresilience.org

Parent Teacher Meetings

County Photos

 

County Photos took place on Wednesday 24th November. Parents will be notified when they are ready to be ordered.

 

Book Bills

Thank you to all parents who have paid their book bills.

Swimming Lessons will take place on Mondays between 11:50-12:40 in Roscommon pool for 7 weeks. They will commence on Monday 10th January. More information on fees will be communicated in the New Year.

 

Music Generation

Cian Cunniffe from Music Generation will continue to visit our school every Tuesday for the rest of the academic year. Each room gets a 45 minute music lesson. Junior pupils have their own music bag with various instruments & senior pupils are learning to play the ukulele. All pupils may bring their instruments home to practice them. A recording of our Christmas programme took place on Friday 10th December and will be shared with parents when we receive the link.

 

Christmas Jumpers/Non-Uniform Day On Friday 10th December all pupils were allowed to wear their festive clothes/accessories and donate money in aid of Brain Tumour Research. Thank you to everyone who made a donation. So far we have raised €140 and donations are still being made! Pupils can wear their Christmas jumpers/clothes, if they wish from Friday 17th of December until the Christmas holidays. We look forward to seeing you in your festive gear!

School Uniforms

Please ensure that your child wears their uniform to school every day in the New Year. The Uniform is as follows:

Crested navy jumper, grey pinafore/skirt/trousers & blue t-shirt Boys:Navy jumper, grey pants, blue t-shirt. On PE days pupils may wear plain navy tracksuit bottoms (No logos or stripes)

Please label all items of the uniform to avoid confusion

 

Computer coding

Pupils in the senior room take part in computer coding every Tuesday from 2-3 with Liz Clinton. Pupils have had 7 classes to date and will have 4 more in the New Year. The children use our school ipads to create/code games on the Scratch App as well as Kahoot quizzes.

 

After School Club

 

After School Club is a big success this year and we are delighted that our tutor, Teresa Nally is continuing to provide this fantastic service. Please ensure that if your child attends Afterschool that they are collected @ 4:30 SHARP. All After School club fees are to be paid to Ms. Watson at the start of each week. Please ensure your child brings a healthy snack for After School Club as this is part of our schools Healthy Eating Policy.

 

Holy Days

 

All staff & pupils will attend 10:00 mass on Thursday 6th January.

October/November 2021

First Holy Communion

First Holy Communion took place on Sunday 19th of September. Congratulations to Eva Rose and Simon. Thank you to Fr. Donnelly for the lovely ceremony and to the choir, teachers and all those who helped on the day. We had a lovely time in school on Monday 20th celebrating with Simon & Eva.

Music Generation

Music Generation takes place every Tuesday with Cian Cunniffe. All pupils participate in Music Generation. The fee for this term is included in the book bills. Pupils are allowed to bring the instruments home to practise. Please make sure to bring them in every Tuesday.

Tree Day 2021

We celebrated National Tree Day on Thursday 7th October. Pupils and staff participated in a nature walk to Longfield House.

Goal Jersey Day

GOAL Jersey Day took place on Friday 8th October. We raised €50 for GOAL. Thank you for your donations.

Sports training

• Gaelic training takes place on Wednesday, with Eugene. GUM-SHIELDS COMPULSORY!

• Please bring football boots/change of runners, to school on Wednesdays so your child can play sports on the pitch.

 

Homework Club

Homework club continues this term from 3-4:30pm at €5 per day with Teresa. We ask that homework club fees be paid every Monday to Ms. Watson.

 

 

Computer Programming

Pupils in the senior room started coding lessons with Liz Clinton & they will continue with classes every Tuesday until Christmas.

 

School Book Rental Scheme

Book bills have been sent to all families, please return monies to school as soon as possible.

County Photos

• County Photos will visit our school on Wednesday 24th of November. Please wear full school uniform on this day.

• Our navy school crested jumper is available to purchase on myschooljumper.ie

Green Schools

All pupils attended the online Green Schools Award Ceremony on 6th of October for our 9th Green Schools Flag; Global Citizenship Travel. In November we will begin working towards our 10th Green Schools Flag for Global Citizenship, Food and Biodiversity. All themes run over a two year cycle. We welcome any suggestions/ideas on how we could improve biodiversity within our school grounds (including pollinator friendly fruit, vegetables, plants and flowers) while being mindful to reduce, reuse and upcycle/recycle where possible.

Parent/Teacher meetings

We are in the process of organising the meetings for this term. Subject to Department of Education approval, we plan to hold face to face meetings. To avoid parents congregating on the corridors, there will be strict adherence to the allocated times for meetings i.e. 10 minutes. Face coverings must be worn and social distancing observed. There will be a one way system to enter and exit the building which will be communicated to you before the meetings take place. Teachers will sanitise the area between each meeting. Details will follow shortly.

Science and Maths

All pupils took part in Maths and Space week activities during the month of October.

Science Week begins on Monday 8th November and all pupils will be taking part in a number of interactive science lessons and workshops during this week.

Communication: The school uses the Aladdin “text” facility to communicate important messages to parents. Accordingly, it is very important that we have an up-to-date mobile number for you. Our text facility does not allow for replies so please email or phone the school if you wish to contact us. An emergency contact number should also be written in your child’s journal. Please let us know if you home/email address has changed.


See saw

Teachers will use the class See Saw platform for communicating with you (Monday-Friday). Due to teacher/class changes some previous accounts may need to be deleted and a new account will be set up.


Lunch

We have a strict healthy eating policy in place in Rahara N.S. This can be viewed on our website www.rahara.com. One small treat is allowed on Fridays only. Pupils attending Afterschool may avail of kitchen facilities after 3:00 only. Rahara N.S is involved in the Green Schools Initiative and we encourage families to cut down on single use plastics such as cling film etc. All pupils must bring home their daily waste/packaging from their lunches.


School Uniform

Please ensure that your child wears their uniform to school every day and that all items of clothing are marked clearly with your child’s name. The uniform is as follows:

• Navy school crested jumper, this will be available to purchase on myschooljumper.ie from Monday 13th of September, grey pinafore/skirt/trousers and blue t-shirt.

• On P.E. days pupils may wear crested jumper/plain navy round-neck sweater and plain navy tracksuit bottoms (No Logos; stripes; hoody; branded top/bottoms; football jersey).


County Photos

County Photos will visit our school on Wednesday 24th of November. Please wear full school uniform on this day.

Football training

Football training will commence on Wednesday 15th September until the October midterm. Pupils must wear gum shields. Please ensure that these have been ‘moulded’ before you bring them to school and that the box/container is clearly marked with your child’s name to prevent confusion.


School Closures

School will be closed for all pupils on Friday 1st of October to facilitate teacher planning/training for the new Primary Language Curriculum.

Please find attached an updated school calendar. Please note that school closes at 12:30 on Thursday 23rd June 2022 for the school holidays.

Absences

Artist in Schools

Our school was selected to take part in the Artist in Schools Scheme 2020/21. This programme funds an artist to work

with the pupils for 15 hours over a term. Local Kiltoom Artist, Louise Shine came to our school and worked with the

children to create cyanotypes, futuristic flying vehicles and an imagined 2080 village. Louise also covered art history

and we were inspired by our Green Schools theme of Global Citizenship – Travel while making sure we used recycled

materials for our creations.


Clár Grant

Thank you to Laurence Fallon for securing funding for Digital Speed Safety Lights, the renewal of road markings and a

Ball Stopping Net Structure for our school. We welcom these improvements around our school and community to

make it a safe and happy environment.


 

Staff

We are delighted to welcome Mrs. Kathy Dolan to our staff as Special Education Teacher. Mrs Dolan will teach in RaharaMonday-Thursday and is alsoavailable to meet with parents.

We are also delighted to have Ms. Michelle Kelly teaching in the Senior Room.

Padraig Lohan will continue his role as cleaner/caretaker for the coming year.

Patricia Finneran will continue as secretary and will be here and Monday and Wednesday afternoons.


Hurling

Hurling training continues to take place every Monday at 2:00. Please ensure your child wears/brings PE gear on those days. Sanitised hurls

and helmets will be provided but pupils may bring their own if they wish.

 


Agrikids

All pupils took part in the Agrikids Webinar in November. The junior room had a story and then learned all about animal

behaviour and animal safety including behaviours in dogs, cats, bulls and horses. The senior room learned about farm machinery and

vehicles. All pupils discussed and learned the importance of safety signage.


Cycle Right

All pupils took part in three cyclev workshops with Noel Feeley from Roscommon Sports Partnership in November/December as part of

our Green Schools Travel flag. We hope to have one more workshop with Noel in the New Year.


Cash for Clobber

Thank you to everyone who collected and donated their clobber at the end of November. It was a great success and our collection

came to a total of 780kg. This is a great way to fundraise for our school whilst raising awareness of textile recycling amongst children.

We recently received a cheque for €312 for our collection.


Toy Show Treats

Big thank you to Helena and Carly who made ‘goody bags’ for all pupils for the Late Late Toy Show. All children were delighted with their bags and it was a lovely gesture to make it an extra special show!


Science Week 2020

Science week 2020 took place between 5 – 9 November. The pupils were very busy investigating chemical reactions to inflate

balloons, make Oobleck and volcanic eruptions. They also made a drinks dispenser and had lots of fun working in pairs/groups.

 


County Photos

A photographer will visit our school on Tuesday 12th January. Pupils are requested to be in full school uniform.


Christmas Holidays

Ericsson Visit

The senior pupils will visit Ericsson on the 15th May. This is in conjunction with our Discover Primary Science + Maths Award. Huge gratitude to Seamus Molloy for setting up this exciting trip for the pupils.

One Good Idea Finals

The Electro Girls are thrilled to be representing our school at the SEAI One Good finals in Dublin Castle on the 14th May. The bus will depart Rahara @ 7am sharp and return @ 5pm. Please return all Publicity Consent forms for both pupils and adults attending Dublin Castle. Pupils who do not attend the finals will have a regular school day under the supervision of Mrs. McGowan and Ms. Connolly. The cost of the bus is €10 per person.

8th Green Flag success!

Congratulations to our Green schools committee and co-ordinator, Mrs. McGowan, as we were awarded our 8th Green Flag for Global Citizenship – Marine Environment. This was a team effort over the past 2 years and we are thrilled to be one of the first few primary schools in the country to achieve this award!

The committee will receive their award at a ceremony in the Hodson Bay Hotel on the 21st May.

We will have our own Green Flag celebration in Rahara NS on Friday 14th June @ 11am. This is always a great event with the Army Band adding to the festivities. Save the date!

Election

School will be closed for polling for the upcoming elections on Friday 24th May.

Bank holidays

School will be closed on Monday 6th May, Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th June as per our school calendar.

Eco-Bricks Stools

Please continue to collect soft, clean plastic for our eco-brick stools. We are delighted with our first eco-brick stool and hope to construct another stool in the coming weeks.

Transition year student

Mark O’Malley, TY student, is carrying out work experience in Rahara NS every Wednesday.

New Priamry Language Curriculum Day

School will be closed for all pupils on Friday 31st May as staff undertake training and planning for the new PLC. This closure has been sanctioned by the BOM. 

School Tour

The Senior pupils will attend Bay Sports on Thursday 2nd June. The cost of the tour is €30 per pupil.

The Junior pupils will go to the Derryglad Museum and visit the Planet entertainment centre on 11th June. The cost of this tour is €18 per pupil.

Sports Day

Our sports day will take place on Tuesday 18th/25th June, weather permitting.

Soccer fixtures

The FAI soccer blitz for two teacher schools will take place in Lecarrow on Wednesday 1st May @ 11am.

The RDFL soccer blitz will take place in Lecarrow on Wednesday 8th May @ 10:30am. In order to avoid the costs of hiring a bus, we are asking parents to assist with lifts to/from Lecarrow on the above dates.

Pupils must wear shin guards!!

Cumann na mBunscol

The senior room will travel to Pearse’s GAA on Friday 3rd May @10am to participate in the 2 Teacher Schools football competition. The pupils will travel by bus. The cost is €5 per child. Pupils must wear gum shields.

Homework Club

There will be no H.W. club during the last week of June. Our final H.W.club will take place on Thursday 21st June.

Summer Holidays

School will close @ 12:30pm on Friday 28th June for the Summer holdiays 

Spanish Students

We will have a new cohort of Spanish students in Rahara NS between 20th- 24th May and 17th – 20th June. The BOM receives €50 per pupil per week. This is a great way of raising funds for our school.


Standardised Tests

Tests will take place between May 27th – June 7th. Please ensure your child is present on these days.

Parent Teacher Meetings

Parent Teacher meetings will take place on Thursday 14th December. If this evening is not suitable, the teachers will organise an alternative time/date.

Heritage in Schools Expert

Martin Curley, Historian, has been visiting the senior pupils on Tuesday mornings during Nov/Dec and teaching the pupils about genealogy and the pupils have been investigating their own family history.

Child Safeguarding Policy

Our Child safeguarding policy was updated and ratified at a BOM meeting on 6th November, 2018. This policy is available on request. A copy of the policy is also on the noticeboard in our entrance hallway. 

Environmental Award

Rahara NS has been nominated for an Environmental Award by Roscommon County Council. Mrs Costello and two pupils will attend the award ceremony on Tue evening 11th Dec in Roscommon. Winners will be announced on the night!

Science Week 2018

Science week 2018 took place between 12 – 16 November. The pupils were very busy investigating bridges, loads and weight, filtering water, investigating surface of the moon, making moon biscuits, creating mooon rockets, designing a martian and making Oobleck.

Garda Visit

Garda John O’Connor, community officer, will visit the senior pupils on 4th December to discuss internet safety.

Swimming Lessons

Swimming will take place on Mondays @ 12 noon in Roscommon pool during January and February. Swimming is part of the PE Curriculum and All pupils are expected to participate in lessons.

County photos

A photographer will visit our school on Wednesday 5th December. Pupils are requested to be in full school uniform.

Christmas Holidays

School will close on Friday 21st December at 12 midday for Christmas holidays and re-open on Monday 7th January 2019. (Don’t forget your swimming gear!)

Pupils may wear their Christmas jumpers on the day of the holidays!

Green Schools- Marine Environment

Dr. David McGrath visited our school on Tuesday 25th September. David is a Marine Biologist and taught pupils about tides and marine biodiversity.

A follow on field-trip for all pupils will take place this Thursday 27th to Silver Strand, Galway. The bus will depart @ 9am sharp and return to the school for 3pm. Pupils must wear warm clothes, coats, hats and wellies. Please ensure you child brings a spare pair of trousers, socks & shoes, a packed lunch and drinks. Children may bring €5 spending money as we will stop at the Galway Plaza enroute home.

Roscommon County Council is funding this initiative in conjunction with the Heritage Council.


Bus transport

The cost of hiring buses is ever increasing and is one of the biggest expenses in our school budget. In future, we are asking parents to contribute €5 per pupil per bus trip.


Referendum

Rahara NS will be closed on Friday 26th October for the upcoming elections.


Mid-Term Break

School will close on Thursday 25th October @ 3pm and re-open on Monday 5th November @ 9:20am.


Staff

Our new SEN teacher is Mr. Kelly. Mr. Kelly will teach in Rahara NS four days per week, Tue – Fri.

Mr. McCormack will teach in the Junior Room until Halloween. Mrs. McGowan will return from maternity leave on the 5th November.

Dylan Donnelly, TY student, will assist in our school every Thursday during Term 1.

Danielle Saunderson, TY student, will carry out work experience in Rahara NS between 8th – 19th October.


Principal Release Days

Ms. Niamh Watson has been employed as a fixed-term substitute teacher to cover all of Mrs. Costello’s Principal Release Days for 2018-2019.


Healthy Lunches

Pupils are allowed to bring one small treat with their lunch on Friday’s ONLY!!

 

Homework club

Our homework club continues Monday – Thursday with Teresa Nally.


Tree Day 2018

The pupils will travel to St. John’s Woods on Wednesday 10th October to participate in a “Woodland Wonders” fieldtrip. This will be led by Arboriculturalist, Shailagh Healy. A bus will bring pupils to/from St. John’s woods.


Sports/ PE

Please ensure your child wears plain navy/black tracksuit bottoms (no logos) on P.E days.

Hurling – Tuesday

Soccer – Thursday

Gaelic – Friday

Each class receives 30 minutes tuition per session.


Goal Jersey Day

Goal Jersey day will take place on Friday 12th October. Please bring in €2 donation for GOAL.

Standardised Tests

Standardised tests will be administered to all pupils from 1st-6th class over the coming weeks, please ensure your child is present, except for illness. The results of these will be recorded in your child’s school report. Reports will be sent home at the end of June.


Cumann na mBunscol County Finals

Rahara NS Hurling team will play against Attyrory NS in the County finals of the Cumann na mBunscol 2 Teacher schools competition in Tisrara on Thurs 24th May at 3:30pm. All supporters are welcome to come along to cheer for our team. We will need parents to help with lifts to the finals.


Referendum

School will close on Friday 25th May to facilitate for the upcoming referendum as our school is a designated polling station. 


SEAI Workshop

Lorraine Flanagan, SEAI, will visit our school on Wed 30th May to carry out an energy workshop with all pupils.


Children First-Safeguarding Training

Mr. McCormack will attend the new Children First Safeguarding training in Athlone Education Centre on Thursday 31st May. Ms. Louise Finneran will teach the Junior classes on the day.


Garda Visit

Garda John O’Connor, Community Policing, will visit the senior pupils on 30th May to discuss road safety and online safety.


Sports Day

Our annual Sports Day will take place on Tuesday 12th June, weather permitting. The pupils will be treated to Supermac’s on the day.


End-of-Year Play

A production of ‘Charlotte Holmes-Future Detective’ will take place in Culleen Hall on Thursday 28th June at 6:30pm. The show should last approx. one hour.

Dress rehearsals will take place in Cullen Hall on Tue 26th, Wed 27th & Thurs 28th June. Pupils must be collected from Cullen Hall at 3pm on these days.


Homework Club

We would like to thank parents for supporting our Homework Club over the past academic year. There will be no Homework Club the last week of June, due to afternoon rehearsals in Cullen Hall.


Summer Holidays

School will close for the Summer holidays on Friday 29th June at 12:30pm. School will re-open on Thursday 30th August for Term 1 2018/201

One Good Idea 2018

Congratulations to our senior pupils who have made it to the semi-finals stage of the One Good Idea competition. Only 20 teams have been selected nationwide and 2 of them are from our school! Well done and keep up the great work!


Open Evening

Our Open Evening will take place on Thursday 8th February between 6-7pm. Please spread the word in the parish!


Safer Internet Day 2018

All pupils will participate in Safer Internet Day activities on Tuesday 6th February. www.webwise.ie/parents have some fantastic resources for parents including the ‘Parent’s Guide to a Better Internet’.


Green Schools EXPO 2018

The senior pupils will travel to the RDS on Thursday 22nd February to showcase their project ‘Zebra Mussels- An Alien Invasion’. The pupils are very busy researching, investigating and gathering information about the invasive species. There were only 12 projects selected countrywide to exhibit at the RDS! Another big success story for our school. The bus will depart at 7am and return at approx. 8pm.


CRAFT-ed Project 2018

Rahara NS has been selected to participate in the CRAFT-ed project. CRAFT-ed is the Design and Arts Council of Ireland’s Primary school visual arts based education programme. An artist/craftsperson will visit our school for 10 sessions to create a project with the pupils. Mrs. Costello will attend In-service next Wednesday evening 7th February between 5-7:30pm to meet the artist and plan the collaborative art project. This is a wonderful opportunity for the pupils of our school.

Primary Language Curriculum Day/School Closure

There will be no school on Tuesday 20th February 2018 as the staff will be attending mandatory Primary Language Curriculum In-Service training in Athlone Education Centre. This has been sanctioned by the BOM.

The 6th class pupils will travel to Knock on Friday 9th February to participate in a Confirmation Retreat. The bus will depart from Knockcroghery NS at 8:30am sharp and return at approx. 4:15pm. Ms. Irwin, Ballymurray NS, will accompany our pupils.

The cost of the retreat is €10. Each child should bring this money with them on the day. There will be food in Supermac’s Roscommon on the way home. The cost of the bus and Supermac’s is paid by the parish.


Cake Sale

A cake sale will take place in our school on Sunday 11th February following 10am mass. All proceed go to the Alzheimer’s Association. Please support!


TY Student

Clodagh Keenan, past pupil, will carry out work experience in our school from 5th-9th February.


Mid-Term Break

School will close on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th February for Mid-term Break.


Swimming Lessons

Swimming lessons will continue until Monday 19th February. The cost of the lessons is €50 per pupil. Please return money to school at your convenience.


Parent and Toddler Group

Our PTG meets every Friday, during term time, in the school hall between 10-12pm. Please spread the word.


All-Ireland Swimming Finalist

The All-Ireland Minor Schools Swimming Championship finals took place in the National Aquatic Centre, Blanchardstown on Sunday 12th February and our 4th class pupil, Lorraine Moran, participated in two swimming events. In the 50 metre Freestyle event, Lorraine secured a time of 39.01 sec and in the 50 metre backstroke event, she secured a time of 44.95sec. Lorraine was delighted with her performances and achieved a personal best in the backstroke event. She also gained invaluable experience from competing in Irelands premier swimming facility. She did herself, her family and Rahara N.S. very proud. Well done Lorraine!
